Tummling Sandakphu Expedition 29th Nov.2011 – 6th dec.2011

Sandakphu, situated at the edge of Singalila National Park, is the highest point of the Singalila Ridge. Perched at an altitude of 3636 meters, it also forms the highest peak in West Bengal. The peak houses a small hamlet, by the same name, which is quite popular amongst the tourists coming to Darjeeling. The town has a very scanty population and is guarded by the Indian army. Sandakphu offers awe-inspiring view of surrounding valleys and hills to its visitors, mainly owing to its strategic location.

The International Awards For Young People had organized a trek to Sandakphu which included 52 students from 5 reputed schools of our city which included Birla High School, La Martinere for Boys, St.James Modern High School and Cambridge International.Gaurav V Vasa and Kaushal Drolia from Birla High School went for this trek.

Our trek started form Manebhanjang which is 51 km from Siliguri station. The total journey from Manebhanjang to Sandakphu and back is 60.km. We all had to carry our Rucksack [a bag that is carried while trekking in which all the belongings of the trekker are kept]. We were accompanied by professional from Juniper to guide us for the journey. The trek was total of 5 days.            The route was as follows:

Manebhanjang – Tummling [10.5 km]

Tummling- Kalapokhri [7km down 6km up]

Kalapokhri- Sandakphu [6km]

Sandakphu – Tummling [12km down 7km up]

Tummling - Manebhanjang [10.3 km]

The main motto and goal was to reach Sandakphu and that was achieved without any obstacles.  During these days, the evening was occupied by different sessions like camp craft rope, survival , knots, map reading and the most amazing the part of any trek i.e. Camp Fire. We celebrate by dancing singing putting up some small plays to name a few. We also had a session on self cooking where we cooked our own food. The stay was arranged in lodges and trekkers hut. Staying facility was basic but the food was very delicious. We never had such good experience in any of the trips.

These are not just treks but an event for all round development for youth , we also receive medals for participating . Our entire event was indeed very enjoyable and fun filled.

Vision and Transition : Parents orientation programme – Class -VI

The move from junior school to middle school can be a time of stress. With new teachers, a wider curriculum, time management problems to negotiate, extra homework, new forms of grades, evaluations and assessments, foreign languages and combinations to remember and the sense of being the new kid on the block, the stresses created by these transitions can be minimized when the new environment is responsive to each age group. Aiming to help ease the strain of this upheaval from childhood to young adulthood, the Management of Birla High School (Senior Section) hailed the parents of the Students of Class VI to the senior school, with an Orientation Programme as a prerequisite part for a comprehensive insight into the motto and vision of the school and the school’s expectation of a collaborative support from the parents to further the cause of shaping their wards into well-rounded individuals. Showcasing the values of the school in an audio-visual presentation, where a snapshot of life at Birla High School was laid bare, based on the principles and transparent techniques of assessing academic performance, exploring new horizons by means of several extra-co-curricular activities, having the world in grasp with tools of foreign language acquisition, which being preconditions to forming caring and confident individuals, both in mind and body, a warm welcome was extended by the Principal Ms. Mukta Nain, who apprised the Parents and Students of the Rules and regulations as she gave interesting insights on parenting, how to “foster” honesty, trust, integrity, forgiveness, understanding and tolerance in the children. In her welcome address, Principal Ms. Mukta Nain emphasized that parents should provide emotional support to their children and try to bridge the generation gap through effective communication. Class 7 students shared their experiences, in the form of a self penned poem, high-lighting their fears and joys as new students. Coordinator for class VI, Ms. Juhi Mathur apprised the parents on evolution of students from Junior to Senior School, their psychological needs and presented details of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System, being implemented at Birla High School from the session 2010-11 through a Power Point Presentation, emphasizing on the fact,"Conduct is what we do. Character is what we are. When character is the root of the tree; conduct is the fruit it bears." Other members of the Panel were Coordinator for Class VII-VIII Ms. R. Bubna, School Counselor Ms. S. Sinha, Sports Coordinator Ms. R. Chatterjee and the Teacher on Special Duty Ms. N. Lunia who expanded on the middle school methodology, transparency in examination system, importance of time management, mapping out daily a schedule, regularity in study habits, school and home work, and the importance of sports, cultural activities and parental support for the students to “blossom” with independence and goodness.

Orientation for Class 11

The orientation program for the freshers of class 11 took place on the 6th of April 2010 from 8:30 A.M. in the Vidya Mandir Auditorium. It began with the registration of the students and their parents. The welcome address was given by the School Principal, Ms. Mukta Nain. The veteran head gave a warning call to all present in the session by saying that the difficulty of class 11 is ten times than that of class 10. She proudly asserted that the schools evaluation of students is better than the board’s evaluation. Hence, it is based on the school’s result that the students are given Science or Commerce. The school focuses on the overall performance of each student. The senior school coordinator, Ms. Suparna Mukherjee addressed the students thereafter and she stressed on maintaining a good attendance percentage, especially on examination days as no retest is held for absentism irrespective of the reason. This speech was followed by a knowledge enriching speech given by the School Counselor, Mrs. Jayeeta Mozumdar. She insisted the students to step out and work towards achieving their ‘own’ goal, and not give in to parental pressure.

To fulfil the needs of the new age student and to equip him to successfully meet global challenges, a plethora of activities have been woven into the school curriculum. These range from sports which including mind sports like quizzing, social and community service to dramatics, debate, talks by eminent personalities, student/parent orientation programmes, career planning workshops, cultural programmes and many more.
