THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN

Students from Classes I to VIII enacted the various characters from the legendary classic of Robert Browning. Scripted and directed by Ms. Sarita Dasgupta, the characters were brought to life, under her able guidance. Ninety six students rehearsed daily, to make this show a treat to watch.

The play was set in the town of Hamelin, which was attacked by a pack of dreadful rats in the year 1376.. They wreaked havoc on the townspeople, making their lives miserable. The Mayor and his Corporators were in a fix, looking for all possible solutions to this menace. Several futile attempts were made to evict the rats out of the town , but all in vain. Finally, the Pied Piper weaved his magic in luring the Rat pack to a watery demise in the river Weser. On not receiving his promised reward, he paid back the Mayor and his Corporators, a heavy price, by luring away all the children of Hamelin, to a magical world, leaving their parents, lonely and heartbroken.

Colourful costumes and melodious music added flavour to the production. The little ones dressed up as rats, stole the show with their wagging tails and jigs on stage. The boys who had dressed up as the opposite gender, were a pleasure to watch. The Mayor and his Corporators, did justice to their roles. Well choreographed dances and excellent songs
kept the packed house enthralled. On the whole, it was a treat to watch. Efforts of the teachers paid off, when the parents and all guests had a word of praise. The entire gamut of putting up a production, such as this is a new learning experience to all, students and teachers alike.

Managing Disruptive Behaviour

The teaching scenario in today’s age is rapidly changing. Understanding the mind of the students is very important for teachers of today. Hence, to equip the teachers with modern concepts of classroom management, Birla High School organized a workshop on ‘Managing Disruptive Behaviour in Children’, on the 29th of March 2007 at the Audio Visual Room of the school.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Anjan Bhattacharya, consulting pediatrician of Apollo Gleneagles Hospital. He gave a medical overview of the problem of disruptive behaviour in students. Apart from psychological or social reasons, medical factors are also the hidden causes that lead to disruptive behaviour. Lack of proper nutrition, weak eyesight, low level of hearing, thyroid and allergy can be some of the reasons behind such behaviour. At times, teachers lack the proper information regarding how to treat a child suffering from serious ailments such as cancer and thalassemia. Dr. Banerjee said “Treat them as normal children but acknowledge their physical disabilities”.
He also advised the teachers not to give negative energy and stigmatize, but instead to empathize and engage these children in various activities. Once the causes behind such behaviour are identified, these children need expert evaluation and constant monitoring of their progress.
The programme ended with an interactive session where the teachers harboured their various experiences, doubts and questions. Some valuable tips were also given regarding the need for well being among the teachers. The teachers gathered various information regarding the facilities offered by Apollo Gleneagles Hospital. In the present scenario where we are talking of inclusive education and individualized education programmes, such workshops enable teachers to keep themselves abreast with the current trends in educational management.

Beat The Stress

Culture conflict among the teenagers, emotional stress and coping up with the pressures of this competitive age, are some of the important issues that need serious consideration. To enlighten the teenagers on these very contemporary issues, Birla High School organized a counseling session for the students of Class VIII at the BBA Conference Room on the 28th of March 2007.
Eminent Psychiatrist Dr. Arnab Banerjee stressed on the need for an awareness of one’s culture and a sound ethical and moral basis for today’s teenagers. Understanding of the institution of marriage and belief in God and consciousness are essential for a well grounded individual. Pressure should be positively utilized to create self esteem in the students and not distress them. Indulging in hobbies, ventilating one’s ideas and communicating with peers can be some effective ways of coping up with stress. Mr. Roychowdhury, an eminent Yoga therapist, exhibited a number of breathing exercises and asanas for relaxing and distressing of one’s self.
Speaker Joyeeta Majumdar spoke on the lethal use of drugs among the teenagers. Teenagers need to avoid drugs and become aware of its deadly effect on themselves. ‘A sound mind resides in a sound body’, this was the core of the session. So, as the teenagers march towards adulthood, they must coordinate physical, mental, ethical and spiritual growth, in order to evolve as a better individual.
It ended with an interactive session followed by a distribution of questionnaires among the students. It was an educative as well as an enjoyable session for the students of Class VIII.

Avoid and help others avoid drugs.

Substance abuse refers to an overindulgence in and dependence on a psychoactive, leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual’s physical or mental health .To create an awareness on this very contemporary issue, an initiative was taken by Birla High School (Boys) to organize a seminar on “Substance Abuse” at the Vidya Mandir Auditorium on the 26th of March,2007.

Mrs Sarala Kapoor set the ball rolling with an illuminating psychological angle to the issue of substance abuse. Prominently, she touched upon the reasons as to why teenagers get lured into taking drugs and the basic symptoms of a drug addict like - the behavioural patterns, unprovoked violence and general emotional detachment associated with drug addiction. She emphasized that the families of the addicts need more moral and emotional support than the addicts, as she strongly feels that “drug addiction is a multidimensional and a holistic problem”
The next speaker Dr. Prathama Chaudhuri offered an informative and crisp medical perspective on drug dependency. Enumerating the various addictive substances, she delved deep into the physiological nuances of drug abuse.. She also gave the audience an insight into the detoxification and rehabilitation programmes available for addicts who want to break free from the lethal cycle of drug addiction. The school counselor Srabani Choudhury gave a very quirky and catchy speech on what teenagers stand to lose or gain by respectively saying “yes” or “no” to drugs.
The seminar was concluded by an interactive session wherein the speakers took questions from the audience; and a quiz was also conducted to gauge the receptivity of the students.
